Fashion is constantly evolving, with each decade bringing new and distinct trends. As a society, we can reflect upon these changes and recognise key styles that defined certain periods of time. From the introduction of gender nonconformity through clothing in the 1960’s, to the iconic figures Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren, who pushed boundaries and redefined fashion as a means for societal change; each era leaves its mark on history. The rebellious statement of punk rock in the 1970’s challenged traditional norms of gender and sexuality, paving the way for people to express themselves through their wardrobe.

Over the years, people have used fashion to establish identity and find meaning within in a community. Now, it is harder to distinguish between subcultures as young people find identity through a cinema screen; connecting with whatever film is trending at a moment in time.

Whilst music has dented society, the impact of film cannot be overlooked. 2004 brought us “13 Going on 30” which did not only receive praise for its iconic soundtrack but also made a lasting impression on the fashion industry. Fast forward to 2021, almost 20 years after the film’s release, we witnessed the resurgence of Y2K fashion – a trend largely inspired by celebrated looks of the film's protagonist, Jenna Rink. Vogue insisted that we would see the famous rainbow dress from the film everywhere that Halloween and of course, they were right – a true testament to the film shaping trends long after its release.

That year we were also gifted “Mean Girls” and to this day, the film remains of cultural significance. In 2019 Dior launched their Regina George inspired “We should all be feminists” slogan t-shirt. Now in 2024, the film has been remade as a musical rendering a modern spin on the timeless classic – further proving its enduring relevance in society.

2023 was a year of many great films. The 21st of July now claims a place in cinematic history as the double release date of two of the highest-grossing films of the year; “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”. The release of Barbie sparked a global trend where audiences wore pink displaying a perfect example of where fashion met film. This was no mere coincidence; the marketing team behind the film were genius, shown down to the styling choices for producer and main character, Margot Robbie. The actor perfectly reinvented some of the doll's iconic looks at premiers around the world.

Released at the end of 2023, Emerald Fennels “Saltburn” has had huge influence on current styling trends. Set in 2006, the film offers a portrayal of a niche group in society – the wealthy. Whilst the plot is quite far-fetched, the glamourised cinematography, nostalgic soundtrack and captivating characters have fans obsessing over the films ethos. Already, we are seeing fashion trends inspired by the film such as animal print, sequins, and messy eye makeup.

In the past, film characters were often unrelatable and unattainably attractive. However, more recently, there has been a shift towards creating characters that resonate with an audience. These characters are presented as desirable and idealistic versions of everyday people, reflecting societies fascination with perfection.

While reality may never truly feel like a movie, we can find glimpses of who we want to be reflected in cinema. And that sense of belonging, although difficult to find in our day to day lives, can be translated through our fashion choices.
