Prices wind back to 1999 as Glasgow institution turns 25
By Maya Day
Glasgow City Centre is a haven for pubs, clubs and bars, drawing a variety of customers to the city center on a regular basis. A popular stop for locals is Bier Halle, founded in 1999 by Colin Barr. The well-known pub is celebrating its 25th anniversary by reducing the prices of its own Bier Halle House Lager to £2.50, offering 1999 pricing.
When Barr opened the doors to the pub in 1999, customers were left a little confused by the simplistic decor which appeared to be unfinished. 25 years later very little has changed. The venue sports relaxed decor, with concrete floors, low wooden tables and steel shades over the lights. The ambience of Bier Halle is unique and planned out to the finest details. From the smell when you enter the bar to the volume of the music, this attention to detail is part of what Barr believes makes his bar stand out. Despite being in a basement, the atmosphere remains laid back and fun, with a mid 20-30s crowd keeping the bar youthful.
The bar opened as Glasgow's first independent bar selling beer and pizza, and with the wide variety of German and Czech beers on offer Glaswegians were spoiled for choice.
Offering more than 70 varieties of beer on their current menu, Bier Halle is currently host to one of the largest selections of beer in a bar in Glasgow. Throughout the years Bier Halle also features specialist breweries to continue offering customers something new, including special beers for Christmas and Oktoberfest.
These experts know exactly what makes the perfect pint. Bier Halle ensures that all of their draught beers are poured through chilled lines, with a bank of chillers ensuring that they hit the stein ice cold. Weekly cleaning of the lines is carried out to avoid any buildup of yeast, ensuring the crisp, unique taste of each pint every time.
The menu has remained similar over the years, with the same team of chefs working in the kitchen for the last 15 years. The most popular item is their pizza. With 19 currently on the menu and two for one pizza every Monday, it's easy to see how their pizzas remain their most popular snack to complement their beers.
They also offer vegan and gluten free options. If pizza doesn't take your fancy, they also offer hot dogs, nachos, chicken wings and loaded fries.
Bier Halle has recently added an outdoors section to their bar, a terrace that allows customers to enjoy the expansive selection of beers outside, whenever the illusive Scottish sun allows.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the beer hall, Barr is throwing a ‘party like its 1999’ event. This will include a variety of guest DJ’s who have played at the pub over the years and a brand-new menu, as well as drink prices that replicate the prices from 1999. Canopy versions of some of their most popular meals from across the years will be on offer, and their website also promises that there will be plenty of their famous butterscotch shooters to go around.
Bier Halle will be open from seven till late on the 29th of November and can be found on Gordon Street. Further information about the event can be found on their website - Republic Bier Halle – It'll all end in Biers !
