Is Glastonbury getting old?
By Ben Wilson
Glastonbury, a staple of British culture and one of the biggest UK festivals bringing in music fans from all over the world. With a wide variety of artists showing what they're capable of, it's really a must-go experience for anyone. However, the organizers have lost sight of what young fans want with the announcement of the recent headline act.
The sought after legend slot is the victim of a decline as over the years artists such as Tom Jones, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond have graced the venue but now a 79-year-old retirement home escapee takes the stage.
Yes, Rod Stewart has been given the legend slot at Glastonbury Festival this year and it has people questioning if this is the best idea. Born in 1945, Rod Stewart dominated the late 60s and 70s music scene with hits like The First Cut is the Deepest, I Don't Wanna Talk About it and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? An amazing music career that no one can deny. However, I don't remember the average Glastonbury fan being in their mid 60s.
Will Rod Stewart fans be at Glastonbury? Yes, but was it really the best pick for the legend slot? With it being such a newsworthy and high-profile announcement here is who I think could be a better pick rather than Mr. Stewart:
Elton John. He’s an amazing artist whose career is far from finished with a docuseries coming out soon, which gives viewers an in-depth look at the showbusiness industry.
Another good suggestion would be Iron Maiden. Not only would this bring new fans to Glastonbury but would open the potential for more rock and metal shows to bring their energy to Somerset.
A sad reflection perhaps is on the shockingly expensive ticket price which means that young people might not be able to afford to go. I expect the nursing homes will be going cuckoo over this announcement.
