Glasgow enjoys margarita day
By Jessica Elliot
National Margarita Day is upon us and bars around Scotland are celebrating.
First concocted in 1938, the margarita was originally mixed by Carlos Herrera. The Mexican restaurant owner created it for a showgirl who was allergic to all alcohol apart from tequila.
She still struggled to consume the alcohol and so he made it his mission to quench her thirst. Little did he know that all these years later, his creation would be drunk around the world, with some bars even offering unique twists.
Margarita translates to the word “daisy”. The daisy is an old illegal drink that has a mixture of base spirit, sugar and a sour flavour.
The margarita can be altered to appeal to different tastes. With a touch of spice, the drink has a kick that makes it unique to its original mix, so with the versatility that it offers, it should be no surprise that it’s such a widely enjoyed beverage.
National Margarita Day celebrates the drink every February 22 with bartenders eager to serve up the drink. The day certainly takes its place as one of the most unique commemorations, with many Scots unaware of its existence.
So, whether you’re an avid margarita enjoyer or a newcomer, there’s no better time to join in the fun than with two national celebrations.
