From Glasgow To Berlin: Scotland’s Euros anthem

By Laurie Finlayson

The story behind the song the Tartan Army will be singing as they march to Munich

Euros fever has well and truly hit Scotland, with the Tartan Army set to descend on Germany for the opening game against the hosts on Friday (June 14). Some fans will be discussing team sections and tactics, while others are more interested in what the tune on the terraces will be. Here at City Live, we think we’ve found the perfect Euros anthem to cheer on Steve Clarke’s side.

PG Ciarletta believes he has the tune that will capture the imagination of the Tartan Army in Germany. Sampling Infernal’s hit, From Paris To Berlin, Ciarletta swaps out the French capital in favour of Scotland’s largest city and From Glasgow To Berlin was born.

Ciarletta has come a long way in his music journey, starting from humble beginnings, he said: I started out playing at open mic nights and in pubs. When lockdown hit, I went back through some writing ideas I had in the past and wrote The Sesh which went on to be number eight inside the official Scottish Chart top 10. Since then, I have played in venues across the UK, including headlining King Tut’s in Glasgow, and playing major music festivals.”

So far, Ciarletta’s rise has had some surreal moments, including performing on the roof of Scotland’s biggest stadium, Murrayfield. Another highlight for the singer is having his track played at the national stadium, Hampden Park.

What we now know as From Glasgow To Berlin came about while at the Isle of Wight Festival last year, on the night of a memorable Scotland victory, Ciarletta added: “On the same day we beat Norway 2-1. I walked past a co-op playing dance hits, and my head just went ‘From Glasgow to Berlin, we’re here to see the Scotland win.’  Then, I posted [the song] on TikTok, and it went viral. I did the same on the night we qualified, and it went even more viral. So yeah, in those moments, it took me by surprise, because you never know what will happen until you post something. Sometimes, you just need to go for it. Since then, it has spread around the country and has been played at Hampden. It is class to see the fans sing the song.”

For months, the Tartan Army have only been able to hear snippets of the track, however, the full single is out now on all major streaming platforms, as is a GBX remix courtesy of DJ and Clyde 1 presenter Geroge Bowie. Ciarletta has a word of advice for any Scotland fan travelling to Germany for the tournament: “Get the tune blasting and get ready to sing the song in Germany!”

Hopefully, From Glasgow To Berlin can be the soundtrack of Scotland’s first foray beyond the group stages of a major tournament.
