Dumbarton FC launched their woman’s team for the start of the 2024/25 campaign and the girls have represented the badge with pride so far this season sitting 4th in the SWFL West League table after 12 fixtures.

The team have notched up some big wins over Clydebank, Benburb, Harmony Row, Saint Anthony’s and 2nd placed Rossvale along with a tightly fought win over Gleniffer Thistle.

The side are one of the youngest in the league and have only lost against the three sides above them, and Head Coach Gerry Gallacher believes the best is yet to come from his side, the majority of whom have come through the same youth setup at Dumbarton United.

Gallacher, who has 30 years coaching experience in women’s football, believes standards of the game have never been higher due to increased participation and interest in Scotland following the success of the national side.

He said: “My team are a young bunch of talented local footballers who we have worked with since they first got into football.

“Dumbarton FC women is about promoting female football in this community. These young players are on the road up, they still have some way to go but come along if you can and watch them on their journey.

“The women’s game is welcoming, family-friendly, competitive, and hopefully these players can help to inspire the next generation.”

Eva McInnes has recently taken over as team captain and is a leader for the girls on and off the park.

She said: “Most of the girls have all been playing together since under 13s or even under 9s so we’ve done a lot of growing up together.

“We all know how each other play inside and out. We’ve also got the addition of some more experienced players who’ve brought the team on.

“There’s loads of talent on the field and we give our all for the side and the badge.”

Forward Gemma Russell urged supporters of the men’s side to come and cheer on the girls.

She said: “We’re part of the club, and the community. If you’re supporting the club then come and support every aspect of it and help us grow as a team for the community to be proud of.”

While games are planned in advance, kick off times are decided closer to matchday and its best to follow along on the club’s socials for up-to-date information.
