Upkeeping Glasgow’s rich artistic history, the third-year students in BA Design Practice at City of Glasgow College have assembled an art exhibition to display their work that has been made to push the boundaries of traditional design.

The pupils have had to work together to create the artwork and layout of the exhibition in a way that they all agree on and make it look in its best form. Text on the wall beside the art pieces say, “The portfolio exemplifies the power of teamwork.”

Gordon Livingston, technical skills worker at the college said: “The biggest way teamwork was involved was when the students worked together to produce the exhibition. They had the idea of how they were going to present it and how they will go about making the pieces the hang up the work.”

The layout of the art is not your standard flat against the wall structure but instead is made 3D by sticking out of the wall vertically which produces a contemporary feel to the structure. Other art pieces are made with fabric, draped from the wall in black and white colour. These have a very abstract pattern on each of them and involve some of the typography similarly used in the acrylic pieces.

The third material used is paper hanging from the ceiling which forms an interesting texture to look at as the paper isn’t just a 2D object with some paint.

Nineteen students and six staff members all worked together to generate this beautiful and unique portfolio which was inspired by Glasgow’s architectural landscape. Each of the art builds were unique or had the same design making each one tell its own story.

Livingston said: “They had to work together in groups to laser cut the wood, to put the pieces together and other smaller projects in between which involved delicate teamwork.”
