The Five Most Anticipated Summer Blockbusters
This summer is shaping up to be an exciting time for big blockbuster movies. There are an overwhelming number of films set to release this upcoming summer, from huge sequels and franchise films to reboots.
I asked the Movie Suggestions subreddit for their thoughts on the potential biggest movies of this summer, with over 60 responses collected to make this list of the top five most anticipated summer blockbuster movies of 2025.
5 – Jurassic World: Rebirth
Starting off strong with the next instalment of one of the most iconic 90s franchises. The Jurassic Park/World series has defined an era of blockbusters for two generations of audiences worldwide. This will be the seventh film of the franchise and will see British sci-fi director Gareth Edwards direct, known for other big franchise films such as Star Wars: Rogue One and Godzilla. With a strong cast starring Scarlett Johansson as the lead and both Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey as co-stars. The film takes place five years after the last film, and planet Earth has become mostly inhospitable to dinosaurs. The film is predicted to do well at the box office and is set to release July 2nd.
4 – 28 Years Later
One of the most famous post-apocalyptic zombie franchises, 28 Years Later is the third film of the trilogy and is perhaps looking to be the biggest horror movie of the year. Scottish director Danny Boyle and English writer and director Alex Garland kicked off this trilogy back in 2002 with 28 Days Later, and now two decades later, both have returned, with Boyle as director and Garland as writer. With Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes set to star as survivors of the Rage virus that began the zombie apocalypse in 28 Days Later. Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return as his character Jim from the first film. 28 Years Later is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 20th.
3 – The Fantastic Four: First Steps
The first superhero film on this list is Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which will be Marvel’s fourth attempt after three previous unsuccessful Fantastic Four films. The film is set in a 1960s sci-fi New York at the height of the space race, and sees Pedro Pascal star as Reed Richards, aka Mr Fantastic, the leader of the group. His wife, Sue Storm, The Invisible Woman, will be played by Vanessa Kirby and Sue’s brother Johnny Storm, The Human Torch, will be played by Joseph Quinn. Finally, The Thing will be played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the reintroduction of the Fantastic Four to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is set to release July 25th.
2 – Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
The eighth and final Mission: Impossible film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, was originally titled part two of 2023's Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The final film is set to see Tom Cruise playing the ever-beloved role of Ethan Hunt one last time. The film will continue where the last movie left off on the hunt for a man named Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, who has control over a powerful AI program. Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg will all return in supporting roles for one last time. The movie is slated to release on May 21st in the UK and is very much anticipated by Mission: Impossible fans.
1 – Superman
As one franchise ends, another rebuilds, as Superman is not only this summer's most anticipated movie, but it could very well be the most anticipated movie of the year. Like the Fantastic Four, this is a fresh start for this character and the wider DC cinematic universe, which is looking to start with this film. James Gunn is in the director's seat and no stranger to the superhero world. David Corenswet will star as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and his alter ego, Superman. Rachel Brosnahan plays Superman’s love interest, Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult plays Superman’s classic arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. There is much pressure on this movie as it’s a real make or break for DC, but with nearly 60 million views on YouTube alone for the first Superman 2025 trailer last December, it seems millions are highly excited for Superman, which is set to release July 11th.
