I attended a teaser session for the returning television series based on Guy McCrone’s best-selling trilogy and New York Times ‘Book of the Month’ Wax Fruit, featuring producer Sarah Purser and Heather Suttie, at City of Glasgow College.
Sarah Purser shared how she and Tommy Gormley moved into a Victorian terrace in Glasgow’s West End, on Grosvenor Terrace. The previous owner left them a card, a bottle of wine, and a copy of McCrone’s 1947 trilogy of novels. Sarah also described how the owner had marked the page where the character, heroine Bel, moves into Grosvenor Terrace and feels that she’s finally “made it.”
Wax Fruit, described as “period drama like you’ve never seen before,” is a sweeping television series set to follow the rapid rise of the Moorhouse clan across generations—from humble beginnings on a Highland farm to a position of power and influence in Victorian Glasgow, the most cutting-edge, progressive metropolis of the era.
From a romanticised Highland setting to prominence in the city, the Moorhouse clan set the standard in this ambitious yet authentic drama set in the late 1800s.
Martin Compston, Ashley Jensen, and Elaine C. Smith are among the all-star cast bringing this “lost classic” to life—fulfilling Sarah Purser’s two-decade-long dream of adapting Wax Fruit for television. To further engage attendees at the teaser session, a seven-minute trailer was shown, highlighting the aforementioned cast along with many other exciting characters yet to be revealed.
The producer invited students of the College to sign a petition to help the show get commissioned and to boost its social media presence.
The audience of over 100 students and staff were all in support and are eager to see what the future holds for Sarah and Wax Fruit.
