Students in Glasgow: How to Make your Money Go Further
Paying rent, for most students is just one of the joys of living in the town in which they have chosen to study. Of course, some areas of Glasgow have always been more expensive, including the West end and City Centre. However, with the rent rocketing for flats in the town, the question of fairness is ringing in the minds of many.
According to global mobility expert ECA International, the cost of renting a home in Glasgow has increased by an average of £73 per month, which is a record-breaking high for the rent in the city and marks the highest rental increase in whole of the UK over the last year.
Relatively speaking, it is cheaper to live in Glasgow than other UK cities such as London, which is around 151.52 per cent more expensive for rentals.
The best way to afford your rent in Glasgow is to flat share; which many students do as an effective cost-cutting strategy. As well as this, you’ll always have a friend or two nearby!
Another effective way to keep costs down is to buy your shopping wisely, go to shops such as Lidl and Aldi. Research shows that Aldi is nearly 20 per cent cheaper than ‘the big four’ supermarkets.
Also, make sure to use your student discount – even on public transport! The First Bus App allows you to buy a student ticket.
Finally, try to buy second hand where possible. There are loads of charity shops in Glasgow, including The Cats Protection and The British Heart Foundation where you can pick up great deals on clothes, furniture, and everything in between to keep you kitted out for the year, on a budget.
