Motherwell extend unbeaten league run following victory over Ross County

Graham Alexander’s side extended their six-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over Ross County at Fir Park, leaving the Lanarkshire outfit fourth in the Scottish Premiership and two points off league leaders Rangers.

Callum Slattery would fire the hosts in front early on, before Regan Charles-Cook brought the visitors level on the stroke of half time.

Ross County would dominate the majority of the possession in the second half, but would be unable to capitalise, and with the sides seemingly destined for draw, Tony Watt would strike late on to earn Motherwell their fourth league win this season.

The Steelmen have picked up 14 points from a possible 21, defeating Livingston, Dundee and Aberdeen before overcoming an early deficit to achieve a well-earned point at Ibrox.

New additions: Liam Kelly, Kaiyne Woolery, Callum Slattery, and Kevin Van Veen have all impressed as Motherwell target a stable long-term future following several years of major squad redevelopment.

A delighted Graham Alexander thought his side put in a winning performance but had to grind out the result in the second half:

“First and foremost, it was a winning performance. I thought we started brilliantly, scored a great goal, and played with real intensity, but we had to grind it out in the second half.

“I don’t think it was a ‘champagne performance’ from us, but we showed enough quality at both ends of the pitch to not concede and to score the deciding goal.”

Striker Tony Watt netted his fourth goal of the campaign and Alexander praised the striker for his efforts to regain his place in the starting 11:

“We had a real good honest chat six weeks ago when he wasn’t in the team, but he was determined to get back in. He’s got a real intent to score goals in training and it’s coming through in his games.

“The credit’s down to Tony as he’s the one who’s getting his shots off, hitting the target more and it was a great run and a superb finish from a tight angle.”

Motherwell could go top of the Scottish Premiership next weekend as they travel to face high-flying Hearts at Tynecastle.
