Staycation or Vacation?
By Julian Pla
We all love a good holiday, getting some time away from the routine and having a good well-deserved rest.
When it comes to holidays, there are plenty of options, but we are focusing on two. Whether going abroad to explore a new culture and visit new places or going somewhere in your country to discover places you have never been to without going too far from home.
They both have their pros and cons, especially when it comes to the finances of it, and the paperwork. Depending on the place a holiday abroad can be too pricey in comparison with a staycation, and you need to have all your papers up to date. However, as of lately with the rise of glamping spots and Airbnb’s it can also be the other way around, saving you the whole passport hassle.
A survey held on social media asking students which type of holiday they preferred gave mixed results however not surprising ones. 85% of the student prefer to go abroad for holiday, for more than obvious reasons like ‘the weather is warmer and nicer’, ‘better food and new cultures’, ‘why stay home when you can learn about other cultures and try new foods’.
However, 14% of students said they preferred staying home and going somewhere they’ve never been in their country. Staying also allows for a more relaxed holiday as you don’t have the hassle of passports, planes and not knowing the language. One of the responses we got said ‘I don't like being in places I don't know with people who are all speaking a language I don't understand. It makes me feel vulnerable, I don't like it. That's probably just me being paranoid but it's how I feel about it’ some others just simply prefer to spend more time with their family which could be a bit harder if planning a trip abroad. ‘I like family walking holidays where we pick a little town and just go’.
So overall people especially students prefer to go abroad to discover new cultures and have new experiences but there are some that just rather go on a hike or discover the wonders of their own country and culture.
