How City of Glasgow College is celebrating LGBT history month

By Skye Morgan

February 2025 marks 20 years of LGBT History Month, so what is City of Glasgow College doing to celebrate and educate the history of LGBTQ+ people?

City of Glasgow College are celebrating LGBT History Month this year with the theme of “Activism and Social Change”.

The website said: “Throughout history LGBT+ people have been activists and helped shape and create social change, advancing society for everyone using many different approaches to activism such as protests, campaigns, craftivism, films and so much more.”

Suki O’Conner, staff at City of Glasgow College, said: “It’s important because LGBT past influences LGBT present, we’re seeing similar struggles from the 70’s again towards gay people being levied towards trans people at the moment, it’s very similar kind of rhetoric.

“History isn’t just one constant progression; it’s a cycle and being aware of the past can help us prepare for the present.”

On City of Glasgow College’s website, they have a page with links to events and entertainment, however, is this enough?

Tricia Walker, student at City of Glasgow College, said: “They could definitely do more [for the LGBTQ+ community]. However, I think what they are doing at the moment, highlighting safe spaces is very important.”

O’Conner said: “I think you can never do enough to celebrate, so I would say probably not.

“In terms of among my colleagues, I feel sometimes there’s a bit of misinformation about pronouns or things like making the classrooms accessible for the diverse body of students.”

Overall, City of Glasgow College are doing a great job at promoting safe spaces, but there is always more work to be done especially around education for the students and staff members.
