Neil Lennon is closing in on his first signing since taking charge at Dunfermline Athletic as Victor Wanyama is set to sign for the Scottish Championship side.

Wanyama previously worked under Lennon for two years at Celtic, where he made 91 appearances across all competitions for the club. He was involved in some massive moments for the club, including scoring the opening goal in the club’s shock 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champion’s League group stage. Lennon will hope that Wanyama can have a similar impact in the Championship.

The 33-year-old has been a free agent since he left CF Montreal at the end of the Major League Soccer season. He is being hailed as a statement signing who will hopefully be able to keep Dunfermline in the Championship for another season.

The Pars sit ninth in the table with seven matches left to play. They are only six points clear of bottom-placed Airdrieonians, but are still hopeful of surviving the drop.

Former Celtic manager Lennon was given the top job last week but has yet to take charge of a game. His first clash will be on Saturday, against someone who he is very familiar with, Scott Brown, who now leads Ayr United from the dugout.

Lennon has admitted that it will be a tough opening game at Somerset Park but Wanyama could change things. The midfielder is set to undergo a medical and if everything goes to plan, he should be available to play in the upcoming game.
