Jaap Stam: Frimpong the perfect fit for Manchester United

Jeremie Frimpong would be a perfect fit for Manchester United, says Red Devils legend Jaap Stam.

Speaking to Makthavare.se, he said: “Frimpong can play as a right-wing back, having also played as a right winger and a right back. He has pace, is very direct and can score goals as well as create chances for his team-mates.”

The Premier League outfit have been crying out for a solid right-back for seasons now, with players such as Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka under a lot of criticism due to underperformances. Despite managing to secure two pieces of silverware over the past two years, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, people still think that the right side of the defence is a weak point in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Could Frimpong be the answer?

After making an impact for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, the Dutchman signed for German side Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021. He has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for the club. He even managed to get his hands on Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title after an unprecedented season under Xabi Alonso.

During this successful period, Frimpong has certainly made a name for himself and there have been rumours of clubs searching for his signature. The power seems to be in Leverkusen’s hands as the wing-back is under contract until 2028, but his release clause is set at just £35 million, a fee which top English sides could easily match.

Stam said: "I think he would be a very interesting player for Manchester United to look at.  He would fit the style of play on the right hand side. The only issue might be if the club don’t want to continue bringing in Dutch players going forward.

“But he has a lot of quality and is doing so well in a tough division in Germany, I think he would be a great fit for the system at United."

If United were to make a move for Frimpong, they would need to act quickly as it would appear that Arne Slot’s Liverpool side are looking to bring him in to replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold. But rumour has it they have decided to join the Reds in talks, with TBR Football exclusively reporting that the Red Devils have held talks with Frimpong’s representatives.
