Cup Finals Weekend set to showcase Scotland’s top volleyball talent
Starting tomorrow, Thursday 17 April, it’s Cup Finals Weekend for Scotland’s volleyball teams.
The events will take place over four days at the Pleasance Sports Complex, located in the Dumbiedykes area of Edinburgh. Tickets are still available for fans of the sport—or for those simply looking to try something new as the school holidays come to a close.
Volleyball is one of the biggest sports worldwide. Rivalling football in countries like Poland, it boasts an estimated 900 million fans globally.
However, in the UK, the sport lacks mainstream media coverage, limiting the growth of its fanbase compared to sports that receive more airtime. To help bridge that gap, Scottish Volleyball will be streaming matches live on YouTube.
Kicking off the weekend of action on Thursday is one of Scottish Volleyball’s longest-running competitions: the Boys Senior Schools Cup Final. It begins at 2pm, with North Berwick High School facing Girvan Academy.
Following that, the Girls Senior Schools Cup Final starts at 3:30pm and features Belmont Academy (South Ayrshire) against Woodfarm High School (East Renfrewshire). This eagerly anticipated match, like the boys’ final, could showcase some of Scottish Volleyball’s future stars.
At 6:30pm, spectators will be treated to a Legends Match featuring some of Scottish Volleyball’s biggest former stars. Confirmed participants include Barry Robertson—who played at the top level for over five decades and, now in his 70s, will return to the court for this special event.
He will be joined by father-and-son duo Alan Krawczyk, a former professional player, and his father Vince, who coached the women’s national team. This will mark their first time playing together on court.
The action continues into Friday with the Indoor Student Cup Finals. The men’s match between Heriot-Watt University and Strathclyde University kicks off at 1pm, followed by the women’s final at 3pm featuring Edinburgh University and St Andrews University.
Who has the skill to match the brains? Head along on Friday to find out—tickets are still available.
Blair Pettigrew, Scottish Volleyball’s Head of Development, shared his excitement for the overall event, particularly the addition of the Student Cup Finals:
“Everyone at Scottish Volleyball is really excited for the 2025 edition of our Cup Final Weekend.
“The events have grown year on year, and it’s great to see the Scottish Student Cup Final included this year.
“It’s a full event with 15 matches over four days and an opportunity for the volleyball family to come together and celebrate our sport.”

Friday will close with the Men’s and Women’s Balltime All-Stars Matches, at 5:30pm and 7:30pm respectively. These matches feature the league season’s top players, selected through Scottish Volleyball’s AI analytics system, Balltime. Players have been drafted into teams by some of the country’s top coaches.
Draft results for both men and women’s teams can be found on the Scottish Volleyball YouTube channel.
Saturday: The Main Event
Saturday brings the pinnacle of the weekend, with the finals of both the SportsHotels Scottish Cup and the Scottish Plate, a competition for teams eliminated early from the Cup or second teams of Cup participants.
Play begins early with the Men’s Scottish Plate Final at 10am, featuring Lenzie vs Aberdeen Vortex.
Next up is the Women’s Plate Final, with Su Ragazzi ‘2’ facing St Andrews University, who stormed past Edinburgh Jets ‘2’ in the semi-finals.
The main events—the Scottish Cup Finals—follow.
The Men’s Final starts at 3pm and sees league leaders City of Glasgow Ragazzi aiming for a double against City of Edinburgh, who knocked out the Glasgow Mets in the semis.
The Women’s Final, starting at 5:30pm, features City of Edinburgh vs Glasgow Mets, who won their women’s semi to reach this highly anticipated showdown, outdoing their male counterparts.
Sunday: The Future Takes the Stage
Sunday is all about the next generation of stars, with Youth Scottish Cup Finals throughout the day.
At 10am, the Under 16 Boys kick things off in an all-NUVOC showdown between the Pumas and Lions.
At 11:30am, the Under 16 Girls Final sees Caledonia West (Troon) face the NUVOC Lionesses in a classic West vs East matchup.
The Under 18 Boys Final follows at 1pm with favourites NUVOC Pumas playing 1``against Dundee Anchor, who are making their first-ever final appearance.
Finally, the Under 18 Girls Final at 2:30pm wraps up the weekend with Caledonia West taking on the City of Edinburgh Eagles—the only final not featuring a NUVOC team.
